THE USE OF CODE SWITCHING AND CODE MIXING IN FACILITATING ENGLISH AS FOREIGN LANGUAGE (EFL) INSTRUCTION IN KHAIRUN UNIVERSITY
Abstract
This study proposes to describe the use of code switching and code mixing in
facilitating English as Foreign Language (EFL) instruction, to identify the kinds of
code switching and code mixing in facilitating English as Foreign Language (EFL)
instruction, and to show the factors affecting the lectures and students use code
switching and code mixing in facilitating English as Foreign Language (EFL)
instruction. The findings from this study conducted in Khairun University, one of
University in North Moluccas. The lectures and students use code switching and
code mixing in facilitating EFL instruction. Lectures and students use English,
Indonesian and non formal language (local language) in teaching and learning
process. There are four kinds of code switching and two kinds of code mixing
occurred in EFL instruction to facilitate them. Four kinds of code switching are
situational code switching, emblematic code switching, switching for affective
function, and metaphorical switching. Whereas two kinds of code mixing are innercode
mixing and outer-code mixing. There are some factors affecting the lectures
and students use code switching and code mixing in facilitating EFL instruction in
Khairun University. The factor derived from students’ background, basic knowledge
of the students, students’ behavior, and lectures make clear ideas.
