TEACHERS’ STRATEGIES AND CHALLENGES IN INTEGRATING TECHNOLOGY IN TEACHING ENGLISH IN RURAL AREA OF DULUPI BOALEMO DISTRICT

Abstract


This qualitative research aims at exploring the teachers’ strategies in integrating
technology in teaching English in rural area and the challenges are faced by those
teachers. The research conducted in Junior High School at Dulupi Sub-District
Boalemo District. Interview and documents analysis were used to collect the data of
research. The participants are three English teachers of Junior High School in Dulupi
Sub-district. The finding is teachers in Subdistrict Dulupi used some various strategies
in integrating technology in teaching English. First, all participants use mobile phone
devices to get material from internet. The second, participant 2 and participant 3 were
used the available technology exist in the school. The last, participant 1 was using
computer laboratory to replace Language Laboratory as to teach writing and listening.
This research was also revealing some challenges that the teacher faced when they
applied the strategies. First, participant 2 and participant 3 had a problem in operating
technology equipment. The second, all participants had a challenge with the
insufficiency of the equipments. The Third challenge is the internet connection found
by all teachers. Internet connection was available in Dulupi sub-district but not
accommodated. The last challenge was fluidity of the electricity. Sometimes the
electricity was off during the teaching and learning process. Considering to the
challenges that the teacher faced in integrating the technology, the teachers should be
able to train themselves to be well-skilled teacher to use each technology devices.
Government was also expected to be able to help teachers particularly and schools
generally.
